ABOUT BERNIES BARBERSHOP.

You’ll find Bernie’s Barbershop tucked away in The Arcade, a short pedestrian lane in the centre of Newbury which connects the busy end of Bartholomew Street to the Marketplace.

A genuinely warm welcome is assured in this lively, vibrant barbers which is a much-loved part of the fabric of this historic market town.

With a decade’s experience of cutting hair Bernie opened his own first shop twenty years ago, putting into practice his personal philosophy of creating a relaxed environment where friends could meet and relax whilst getting their hair cut.

This soon became a success and as the business grew it changed locations a few times, moving to bigger premises, but always retaining a chilled atmosphere and an eclectic décor in inspired by Bernie’s diverse and individual taste, in art, artifacts and funky furnishings. Customers new and old are made to feel at home in this friendly, professional establishments, which puts a unique and original spin on going for a haircut.

BERNIE

MEGAN

Hi, I’m Megan, I’ve been a barber at Bernie’s since 2017.

My love of hair started in my teens when I became heavily influenced by the creative hair and makeup styles I saw in music and art. After copying my favorite bands and practicing some questionable DIY cuts on myself and my brothers I decided to study hairdressing at Reading College!

A few years on, I studied at the London School of Barbering so that I could specialise in cutting shorter styles on men and women.

I grew up in Newbury, moved around a few cities, and am now living in Swindon with my partner.
When I’m not at work, I love going to gigs and the theatre as much as possible. Also, I’m still copying musician’s haircuts (cough Sinead).

NATHAN

I am a Level 2 qualified Barber who has been working in the industry for 2 years.

I have always had an interest in pursuing a career in the industry and when I turned 40 I decided it was time to pursue my passion.

When I’m not cutting hair I like cycling and travelling.

I look forward to seeing my regular clients as well as meeting new ones.

STACEY

I started my career in the hair industry when I was 13 as a Saturday girl. In a little hair salon called Bravo and decided from then, I was going to pursue my career in hair.

At 16 I did my apprenticeship at mission hair also in Newbury. I also qualified in a few beauty courses too. Which then lead me to open a beauty salon.

After a year I decided I wanted to go back into hair, but didn’t want to do women’s hairdressing, which is when I decided I wanted to become a barber. Best decision I’ve ever made!

I did a course in barbering and cutthroat shaving with ‘hair for men’ in Sandhurst. From there I went on to work at a small shop back in Newbury. However one day I wanted a change and It was then I walked into a little shop down the arcade that I met my now very good friend Bernie.

I’ve been at Bernie’s (then the Barber Lounge) around 7 years now. After around a year and a half of working with Bernie, I was headhunted by a well-known barbershop in Amsterdam, Cutthroat Barbers. If it wasn’t for the encouragement of Bernie I don’t think I would have gone.

After working 3 days a week in a barbershop in Hastings for a year doing extra training, I was ready for the big move.

While in Amsterdam I worked with very talented and inspiring people, worked on the biggest Amsterdam dance event single handily, and started my own business there. Working in offices cutting the employee’s hair. It was amazing!

For personal reasons, my time in Amsterdam came to an abrupt end.

Birmingham came calling and I was asked to manage a shop called Rockstars on the Hadley Road. It was another great experience however I wanted to come back to my home town.

Bernie welcomed me back into the shop and I’ve been working here ever since.

I specialise in skin fades and cutthroat shaving but have a wide variety of skills in the hair and beauty industry.

I love all my loyal clients especially those that have been with me since day one. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible.

My next step in barbering is to get an apprentice, I would love to give my skills to someone else and make them into an amazing barber.

I would also like to do some hair shows or film and tv work and of course have my own barbershop one day!
